Chestnut

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests are extensive in northern Fennoscandia. This mature stand has been thinned multiple times.

 

Nest of a western capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus spp urogallus) in an open mature Scots pine forest with a Vaccinium-dominated understory.  This clutch size is about average. The capercaillie is the largest grouse species.

 

This stand and nest are in northern Sweden, but capercaillie are abundant throughout Scandinavia. It was extirpated in Scotland and has been reintroduced with birds from Scandinavia.
